March two Vallejo A&E Source: Vallejo Symphony gets a Stern lesson

Published Wednesday March 1

…a Stradivarius just as one can’t completely forget how to drive if dumping a Datsun for a Tesla.

It’s not as if every technique Kay Stern learned had to be erased when she 1st picked up a bow and played a Stradivarius just as one can’t completely forget how to drive if dumping a Datsun for a Tesla.

Still, “I had no idea how to play an instrument that doesn’t need to be manipulated,” Stern said. “We all have these instruments we gradually know how to finesse and make them sound the best we can, but with a fine Stradivarius you have to give up everything you’ve learned to compensate with on your own instrument and really let your ears and body adjust to what a Stradivarius is giving you.”

Stern remembers Taddei on trombone during that notable education.
