Pacifica: Card ‘skimmer’ found on ATM

Published Sunday March 5

As of late Saturday, police had not reported making any arrests in the case.

PACIFICA — An alert customer who noticed a stray wire on an ATM machine led to the discovery an illegal device that had been set up to skim customers’ card numbers and passwords.

Police were summoned at 1 in the afternoon Thu to a 7-Eleven store at one hundred Clarendon Road after a customer making a transaction at the ATM noticed a wire protruding above the PIN pad on the automated teller machine.

According to Captain Joe Spanheimer, investigators found a false bottom on the machine, a bogus PIN pad and a pinhole camera that was connected to an illegal card reader.
